Community-based Red panda Monitoring

Picture
RPN has initiated its flagship program in Eastern Nepal, which is basically a long-term community-based red panda monitoring and educational program in and around unprotected forest of Ilam, Panchthar and Taplejung districts. RPN aims to maintain the central linkage in the Kanchenjunga Mountain Complex (KMC) using red panda as an indicator species of Eastern Himalayan Broadleaved forests. Conservation of this area is critical to the landscape level conservation in the Eastern Himalaya - Sacred Himalayan Landscape (SHL).

The core part of this project is the Forest Guardian - who are the local villagers selected from the villages nearest to the respective forest and are trained by RPN to conduct red panda monitoring along established red panda transect and conduct awareness and educational program creating local stewardship in their respective villages.
